Ministry of Health Report: Over 86,000 Surgeries Performed Last Year

The Ministry of Health of Oman reported in its annual report for 2023 that 86,955 surgeries were performed in its hospitals. Of these, 39,976 were for men and 46,979 for women.

The number of hospitals in the country has increased to 92, with 7,691 hospital beds, raising the bed rate to 14.9 beds per 10,000 population.

Health expenditures for the past year exceeded one billion Omani Riyals, reflecting a 24.6 percent increase compared to the previous year. This rise is largely attributed to development projects and the construction and expansion of hospitals and healthcare institutions.

In health indicators, the infant mortality rate decreased to 8.5 per 1,000 live births, and the under-five mortality rate dropped to 10.8. The overall mortality rate also fell to 1.7 per 1,000 people.

The number of healthcare institutions under the Ministry’s umbrella reached 265, including 50 hospitals with 5,024 beds, 21 health complexes, and 194 health centers. The number of Ministry staff increased to 39,542.

Visits to outpatient clinics reached 15.3 million, and the number of radiological exams performed increased to 1.8 million. Additionally, the number of dialysis patients rose to 2,588, and hospital admissions totaled 302,000.

In organ transplantation, 19 kidneys, 11 livers, and 20 corneas were transplanted. The Ministry has also made significant efforts in controlling infectious diseases and improving the immune system.
