Oman 3rd most peaceful country in the Middle East

The Sultanate of Oman has made a remarkable leap in the 2024 Global Peace Index (GPI), achieving the rank of third in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and 37th globally.

This leap, published in the 18th report by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), represents a significant achievement for Oman. With a score of 1.761, Oman now stands as the third most peaceful country in the MENA region, following Kuwait (25th globally with a score of 1.622) and Qatar (29th globally with a score of 1.656). This progress is particularly impressive given the region’s historical challenges with peace and stability.

Oman’s advancement in the Global Peace Index marks a significant milestone, with the country moving up to 37th place globally, a notable improvement from last year.

The Global Peace Index evaluates the peacefulness of 163 countries, covering 99.7% of the world’s population, across three domains: societal safety and security, ongoing domestic and international conflict, and militarisation. Oman excelled in the conflict domain with a score of 1.504, indicating a high level of peace, and in societal safety and security with a score of 1.745, reflecting a strong societal framework. However, Oman’s score in the militarisation domain was 2.176, highlighting areas for potential improvement.

Oman’s rise in the GPI follows a significant ascent last year, where the country climbed 16 places to reach 48th position. This consistent upward trajectory underscores Oman’s dedicated efforts to enhance internal stability and promote a peaceful society. Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates ranked fourth in the MENA region and 53rd globally, while Jordan ranked fifth regionally and 67th globally.

Despite Oman’s positive trend, the GPI report continues to identify the MENA region as the least peaceful globally for the ninth consecutive year. The region experienced a slight deterioration in peacefulness by 0.25% over the past year. Notably, four of the ten least peaceful countries in the 2024 GPI are located in the MENA region.
