As part of Oman Vision 2040, the Sultanate is charting a new direction in urban planning through smart cities that combine technological innovation with the preservation of national identity and traditional architecture. The Sultan Haitham City stands as a flagship model, blending cultural heritage with modern solutions to represent the cities of the future.

Balancing Tradition and Innovation

According to Hassan bin Ali Al-Shukri, an architect at the Executive Office for Smart City Projects, Oman’s smart cities are not just about technology but serve as tools to renew identity and enhance quality of life. He explained that local building materials, the ancient aflaj system, traditional mashrabiyas, and Omani architectural features provide a sustainable foundation for reducing energy consumption, improving air quality, and intelligent resource management.

Heritage as a Foundation for a Sustainable Future

Dr. Haitham bin Najim Al-Abri, an architect and researcher in Omani urbanism, highlighted Oman’s unique architectural legacy, shaped by the wisdom of ancestors in harmony with nature. He stressed that Omani smart cities are not copies of global models but an extension of local genius—where technology strengthens identity rather than erasing it.

Challenges and Local Solutions

Al-Abri noted challenges such as reliance on imported models, lack of digital documentation of heritage, and shortage of skilled local experts. He suggested solutions including localized innovation, comprehensive digital heritage documentation, and integrated education between tradition and technology, turning these challenges into opportunities for sustainable development.

Abdulaziz bin Mohammed Al-Balushi, a property owner in Sultan Haitham City, emphasized that Omani smart cities offer a unique balance between social privacy and modern technology. He noted that urban design merges traditional elements such as arches and motifs with modern features like smart lighting and green pedestrian pathways, creating a living environment that is both authentic and future-ready.
