Oman’s First Polymer Banknote Enters Circulation

The Central Bank of Oman announced that, starting 11 January 2026, the first-ever polymer one-rial banknote in the history of Oman’s national currency will officially enter circulation.

Although issued as a commemorative banknote, it carries full legal tender status and will circulate alongside the current one-rial note in all daily transactions.

The new banknote is made of polymer, offering greater durability, longer lifespan, and enhanced anti-counterfeiting security compared to the cotton-based banknotes currently in use. It measures 145 × 76 millimetres, and its design reflects Oman’s national identity:

• The front features the Oman Botanic Garden,
• The reverse depicts the Sayyid Tariq bin Taimur Cultural Complex alongside the Duqm Port and Refinery.

In terms of security features, the banknote includes a large transparent window inspired by the architecture of the Oman Botanic Garden, a color-shifting frankincense tree symbol, and color-changing ink elements integrated into the Central Bank’s visual identity.

The Central Bank also announced the release of 1,000 full sheets of banknotes and 10,000 individual notes in special collector packaging. These will be available for sale starting 11 January 2026 through Central Bank exchange offices in Ruwi, Salalah, and Sohar, as well as at the Oman Post counter at Opera Galleria.
