In line with preserving the sanctity of Ramadan and respecting Islamic traditions, Article 277 of the Omani Penal Code, issued under Royal Decree No. 7/2018, prohibits public consumption of food, beverages, or any items that break the fast during daytime fasting hours.

This article falls under Chapter One, “Crimes Affecting Religion”, in Section Eight. It states:

📜 “Anyone who publicly consumes food, beverages, or any item that breaks the fast during the daytime in Ramadan shall be punished with imprisonment for a period not less than 10 days and not exceeding three months.”

Religious Traditions and Social Values in Oman

Oman has always emphasized respect for religious values and cultural identity. The enforcement of this law reflects the nation’s commitment to Islamic principles. It also aims to promote social cohesion and regulate public conduct during this sacred month.

Encouraging Respect and Mutual Understanding

During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from eating and drinking throughout the day. This practice is not only a personal act of worship but also a symbol of collective discipline and Islamic traditions.

✅ Accordingly, this law urges all individuals—citizens, residents, and visitors—to adhere to these regulations. It also promotes understanding and mutual respect within the community.
