With Ramadhan and Eid holidays just concluded, several regions across the Sultanate of Oman are witnessing a sharp rise in temperatures, signaling the arrival of summer.
According to the latest bulletin from Oman Meteorology, Sur recorded the highest temperature at 41°C in the past 24 hours. Other areas saw similarly high readings: Bausher at 40.6°C, Samail 39.6°C, Jaalan Bani Bu Hassan 38.7°C, and Al Buraimi 39°C.
This heat surge comes as 2024 has been officially confirmed as the warmest year ever recorded globally, as per the World Meteorological Organization and NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI).
A study led by the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (China) reveals that 90% of the excess heat from global warming is stored in oceans, and ocean heat content is now at its highest level in recorded history. Between 2023 and 2024, global upper-ocean heat content rose by 16 zettajoules—equivalent to 140 times the world’s electricity generation in 2023.
