Taxis and Car Rental in Oman: Apps, Airport Transport and Driving Rules

For most visitors, getting around Oman comes down to four practical options: licensed taxis, taxi-booking apps, public buses and rental cars. The right choice depends less on a single headline price and more on where you are staying, how often you will travel each day and whether you are comfortable driving.

Short urban trips in Muscat are usually straightforward by taxi or licensed app. A rental car becomes more useful when your itinerary includes several stops per day, areas outside central Muscat or longer road trips. If you are still planning the wider trip, Connsect's practical Oman travel tips cover other points worth checking before arrival.

Which transport option makes sense in Oman?

There is no single best option for every visitor. Taxis reduce the administrative burden of driving, buses can be cost-effective on suitable routes, and a rental car gives significantly more flexibility for multi-stop itineraries.

Using taxis and taxi apps in Oman

Passenger transport by taxi is regulated, so visitors should use a licensed taxi or an authorised booking platform. Oman’s transport regulations set licensing conditions for taxi drivers and provide for use of a taxi meter; the taxi operating regulations also address driver eligibility, health and training requirements.

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology publishes the licensed taxi applications and notes that digital services can provide fare information before the trip as well as driver and vehicle tracking features.

The official platform list includes OTaxi, Yango, Marhaba, Oman Taxi, Muscat Taxi, Taxi F, Hala Taxi and Tasleem. Availability can differ by location, so compare the services shown in the app when you actually need a ride.

Oman has also tightened the connection between conventional taxi operations and digital platforms. According to the ministry's digital taxi framework, taxi drivers have been required to join licensed applications from April 2025.

Muscat Airport: taxi, bus or rental car?

Muscat International Airport supports all three main options, so you do not need to arrange informal transport before arrival. The airport's ground transport information lists official taxis, public buses and car-rental services at the terminal.

A taxi is normally the simplest choice when you want a direct journey to a hotel or residence. Public transport can make more sense when your destination is close to a Mwasalat route and you are travelling with manageable luggage.

For one official example rather than a universal tariff, an Oman Civil Aviation Authority source gives an airport-to-hotel trip at about OMR 5-7 by Mwasalat Taxi and OMR 4-5 by OTaxi. These are route-specific fare examples, not fixed prices for every destination in Muscat.

Using Mwasalat buses from Muscat Airport

Mwasalat is the main public-bus option for travellers whose destination sits on the city network. Its A1 airport route links Muscat International Airport with Al Mabelah and Ruwi.

Check the current route and stop information before departure rather than assuming that the nearest bus stop will be practical for your hotel. For passengers with heavy luggage, children or a late arrival, a direct taxi may still be the more practical choice even when a bus route exists.

Renting a car in Oman

Car rental is particularly useful when your plans extend beyond a simple hotel-to-office or hotel-to-attraction pattern. It gives you control over timing and is often easier for trips with several daily stops or destinations outside the main urban core.

Before paying, compare the contract terms rather than the daily headline rate alone. Insurance scope, excess, deposit, mileage allowance, fuel policy, additional-driver rules and roadside support can materially change the real cost of the rental.

Rental vehicles are themselves subject to registration requirements. The government provides a rental vehicle registration approval process for companies before registration is completed with the Royal Oman Police.

What documents do visitors need to rent and drive?

A rental company will normally ask for identification, a driving licence it accepts and an approved payment method. The exact commercial requirements can vary by company, so the rental agreement remains important even where the traffic rules permit you to drive.

  • Valid passport or accepted identity document
  • Valid driving licence accepted by the rental company
  • Payment card or another payment method accepted by the provider
  • Any additional document required under that company's rental policy

The Royal Oman Police states in its visitor driving guidance that a person entering Oman on a short visit may drive for up to three months using a driving licence from their own country. Residents, by contrast, need an Omani driving licence.

This traffic rule does not force every rental company to accept every foreign licence without additional documentation. A provider may still ask for an International Driving Permit or other supporting documents under its own rental terms, so confirm licence acceptance before making a non-refundable booking.

How much does car rental cost in Muscat?

Rental prices vary with vehicle class, booking date, rental duration, insurance package and demand. One current market example places economy cars in Muscat at roughly OMR 8-14 per day; the published rental price range should be treated as a planning reference rather than a guaranteed rate.

Deposits also have no single nationwide fixed amount. The figure, payment method and release timing depend on the provider, vehicle and contract, so check both the amount and the refund or card-release conditions before collection.

How to avoid fare and rental disputes

For taxis, use a meter or a licensed app that clearly records the trip and fare information. Keeping the booking inside the app also gives you a record of the vehicle, driver and journey details if a dispute arises.

For a rental car, photograph the vehicle at collection, verify existing damage against the handover record and read the insurance excess and fuel terms before signing. A low daily rate is not necessarily cheaper if the contract has restrictive mileage, a large excess or unclear deposit conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Do tourists need an International Driving Permit in Oman?+

Not in every case under the traffic rule itself. Royal Oman Police guidance says a short-term visitor may drive for up to three months using a licence from their own country, but a rental company can still require an International Driving Permit or other supporting document under its contract.

Which taxi apps are licensed in Oman?+

The official list includes OTaxi, Yango, Marhaba, Oman Taxi, Muscat Taxi, Taxi F, Hala Taxi and Tasleem. Coverage and vehicle availability can vary by area.

Can I take a public bus from Muscat Airport?+

Yes. Mwasalat's A1 route connects Muscat International Airport with Al Mabelah and Ruwi. Check the current stop and timetable before travel.

How much is an economy rental car in Muscat?+

A current published example gives roughly OMR 8-14 per day for economy cars. Actual quotes depend on dates, rental length, insurance, vehicle class and demand.

Is there a standard rental-car deposit in Oman?+

No single nationwide deposit amount applies to every rental company. Check the provider's contract for the deposit value, payment method and release conditions.
