Floral Decoration of Sultan Qaboos’ Mausoleum on Oman’s National Anniversary

In late last week, the mausoleum of Sultan Qaboos bin Said — the former Sultan and the architect of modern Oman — was decorated with fresh flowers on the occasion of his 85th birthday anniversary and on the eve of Oman’s National Week.

Sultan Qaboos, who ruled Oman from 1970 to 2020, married once but had no children — a matter that had made the issue of succession one of the most important elements of the country’s political structure.

According to the tradition of power transfer within the Al Sa‘id family, a sealed will that Sultan Qaboos had written in advance was opened after his passing, in which his cousin, Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Sa‘id, was named as his successor.
The annual floral decoration of Sultan Qaboos’ mausoleum is a reminder of his role in shaping modern Oman, developing infrastructure, and consolidating the country’s international standing.
