Oman’s Ministry of Education has decided to cancel the compulsory teaching of French and German after 13 years and has introduced Chinese as part of the new curriculum.
This change, announced through Ministerial Decision No. 192/2024, aims to expand the variety of foreign languages offered and enhance students’ language skills.
Under this decision, previous Ministerial Decisions No. 389/2011 and 129/2022, which were responsible for implementing French and German language programs, are revoked. Responsibilities for these programs will be transferred to the newly established Foreign Language Curriculum Department.
However, the Ministry of Education has emphasized that French and German will continue to be offered as elective subjects for students in grades 11 and 12 in schools located in Muscat, North Batinah, and South Batinah.
