Sightseeing Attractions in Nizwa
Tourism is a key economic driver in Nizwa, offering a diverse range of historical, natural, recreational, and commercial attractions. Below, we highlight some of the major tourist attractions, hotels, and recreational shops in Nizwa.
Nizwa Souq
Nizwa is home to one of the oldest souqs in the country, a sprawling marketplace with dedicated sections for fruit, vegetables, meats, and fish, all nestled behind the iconic city wall overlooking the wadi. The area nearest to the fort serves as a focal point for handicrafts, with a particular focus on catering to tourists. While antiques and silver items may not be budget-friendly, the local craftsmanship, especially the renowned silver khanjar, is known for its high quality. Today, Omani master-craftsmen often collaborate with Indian and Pakistani silversmiths, resulting in exquisite workmanship.

Nizwa Fort
Constructed over a 12-year period in the 17th century under the rule of Sultan Bin Saif Al Yaruba, the inaugural imam of the Yaruba dynasty, Nizwa Fort is renowned for its unique 40-meter-tall circular tower. Ascending to the tower’s pinnacle allows for a panoramic view, offering a sense of the vastness of the nearby date plantations and a breathtaking vista of the Hajar Mountains that dominate the town. Nearly all Nizwa tours incorporate the fort into their schedules, providing context to this monumental structure.

Falaj Daris Park
Stretching over a remarkable 7990 meters, Falaj Daris ranks among the largest irrigation channels in Oman. It’s one of six such channels in Oman that collectively earned the distinction of being recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006. Even today, water continues to flow through the restored section of the falaj, which is visible within the confines of this charming park. The park itself provides an abundance of shaded picnic areas surrounded by vibrant tropical flowers, including fragrant frangipani, peacock flowers (caesalpinia), and clusters of bougainvillea.

Livestock Market
If you can tolerate the scent of bustling bulls and testy goats, the livestock souq is definitely worth a visit. This livestock market is situated on a modest piece of land just beyond the main market walls, to the left of the entrance. The lively trade involving goats, sheep, and cattle is a time-honored tradition that has endured for centuries.

Al Qala’a Mosque
Nizwa was historically a prominent hub for Islamic scholarship, and it is home to two ancient mosques, among the oldest in the world, dating back to the early 7th century. Near the souq and the fort, these mosques contribute to an impressive architectural ensemble in the heart of the town.
For those curious about the undeveloped space in front of the mosque, the reason is that, despite the hot and arid surroundings, this area serves as an active wadi. It experiences seasonal flows of mountain water several times a year. Please note that the mosque is closed to non-Muslim visitors.

Nizwa Gateway
This impressive double-arched gateway spans Highway 21, which follows the original Muscat–Nizwa route. While the watchtowers that create the gateway’s pillars may appear weathered, it’s important to note that this gateway was actually constructed in 2015.

Must See Hotels in Nizwa
Nizwa offers a variety of hotels to suit different preferences and budgets. Here are some of the best hotels in Nizwa:
Nizwa Heritage Inn
Consisting of four newly renovated old townhouses, this charming hotel (booked through email) is situated directly behind the souq and plays a crucial role in preserving Nizwa’s historic quarter from abandonment. While some rooms may be dim and lacking windows, they offer a unique experience with their internal pillars, timbered ceilings, alcoves, and Omani artifacts. Staying here offers a privileged glimpse into traditional life in this historic town.

Falaj Daris Hotel
This exceptionally welcoming hotel, located 4km east of the town center, is built around two swimming pools and a bar. With a backdrop of rugged mountains in the distance, it stands as one of the finest hotels in Nizwa. The rooms in the newer building typically have a more modern design.

Tanuf Residency
Featuring a gleaming white marble lobby and well-lit corridors, this hotel underwent a comprehensive renovation in 2018, resulting in a contemporary, efficiently managed establishment. It offers remarkably comfortable rooms at budget-friendly rates, complete with complimentary tea and coffee.
The top-floor restaurant serves a satisfying breakfast, and the nearby Turkish restaurant is an excellent choice for dinner.

Nizwa Residence Hotel Apartments
This recently opened hotel, situated in a modern building along the route into town, offers an eight-minute walk to the souq. Many of its rooms provide a picturesque view of Nizwa’s impressive trio of fort, souq, and mosque.
While the double rooms offer a functional atmosphere, the 19 apartments, complete with kitchens and lounges, provide exceptional value for guests seeking a more spacious and comfortable stay.

Noor Majan Camp & Restaurant
Located in the vicinity of Nizwa, in the nearby town of Manah, this desert camp provides basic barasti (palm-frond) huts with shared bathroom facilities. With a couple of ancient, deteriorating villages nearby to explore and a renowned language school for Arabic instruction, Manah offers a taste of the desert for those who may not have the time to venture out to the dunes.

Majan Guesthouse
This dependable budget hotel, adorned with Arab decor and intricately carved wooden doors, offers a welcoming place to spend the night. Conveniently located next to Hungry Bunny, the hotel is 5km east of the town center.

Al Diyar Hotel
the gypsum and marble foyer exudes some charm with its hand-painted lozenges on the walls and ceiling, but this charm doesn’t carry over to many of the plain, spacious no frills rooms.
However, in a bustling town with limited accommodation options, this is hardly a critique. The new wing offers rooms with contemporary comforts. The hotel offers a convenient location, just 3.5 kilometers to the east of the town center.
