To boost the cruise tourism sector in Oman, the government has introduced a new visa category for cruise ship passengers and crew. This decision, issued on September 3, includes 10-day and one-month visit visas, aimed at facilitating the entry process for tourists arriving via cruise ships.

This move comes at a time when Oman’s tourism sector is experiencing steady growth. According to the National Centre for Statistics and Information, the number of visitors to Oman in 2024 reached 2.3 million by the end of July, marking a 2.4% increase compared to the same period last year.

Strategic Initiative to Attract More Cruise Tourists

Sreedhu Nair, Director of Sales and Marketing at Travel Diaries, commented: “Offering a free 10-day visa for cruise passengers is a strategic initiative designed to attract more tourists and further establish Oman’s position in the competitive cruise tourism market.”

He added that as Oman strengthens its position as a prime cruise destination, the new visa regulation will not only bring more visitors but also boost local businesses.

A New Experience for Tourists in Oman

Jen Meyer, a tourist at Muttrah Corniche, said: “I’m visiting Oman again after the COVID-19 pandemic. It has been a long-awaited trip. Oman has so much to offer, from breathtaking landscapes to rich history. With the new visa, I now have more time to explore places I hadn’t planned to, like Sur and Nizwa. I’m thrilled to have more flexibility in my travel itinerary.”

Growth in Local Businesses at Muttrah

The new visa decision has been warmly welcomed by local businesses, especially those operating near Muttrah Corniche, where cruise ships typically dock. Muttrah Souq, known for its vibrant atmosphere and variety of goods, sees a significant influx of cruise tourists during the winter season.

Shopkeepers at Muttrah Souq are excited about the prospect of more tourists and increased sales.

Sadiq Khan, who owns an antique shop at Muttrah Souq, said: “We always look forward to cruise ship tourists, and this new visa brings more business opportunities. When tourists stay longer, they often return to the souq to buy souvenirs, especially antiques.”

Nurul Alam, owner of a shawarma shop in Muttrah, expressed similar optimism, saying: “More tourists mean more footfall. Many of them come back for a second or third shawarma during their stay. This new visa is a win-win for both tourists and us.”
