In a pivotal move towards localizing hardware production for its ambitious green hydrogen initiatives, Oman has signed a provisional agreement with Chinese solar photovoltaic manufacturer Hainan Drinda New Energy Technology to establish the country’s first-ever photovoltaic cell production facility.

Hainan Drinda, headquartered in Haikou, announced in a Shenzhen Stock Exchange filing its plans to invest approximately $700 million to construct a high-efficiency photovoltaic cell plant in Oman. This landmark project aligns with Oman’s vision to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and transition towards renewable energy sources.

Photovoltaic cells, the key components of solar panels, are responsible for converting sunlight into electricity. The establishment of this manufacturing plant will not only enable Oman to meet its domestic demand for solar cells for renewable energy and green hydrogen projects but also position the country as a regional hub for PV cell production. This endeavor is expected to generate employment opportunities and boost Oman’s non-oil exports.

The signing of this agreement and the subsequent construction of the PV cell manufacturing plant are anticipated to revolutionize Oman’s renewable energy landscape and propel the nation’s sustainable development goals.
